Our Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs are headed by CageworX Coach Cody Houston who holds a 1st degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the highly regarded Marcelo Alonso and is a Kru Yai in Muay Thai under Ajahn Suchart. The CageworX coaching staff have several decades of experience working with a wide range of students. We can help you whether you want a challenging workout and never want to compete, or you want to train intensively as an MMA fighter for the CageworX Fight Team.

Professor Cody Houston
Head Instructor

Professor Cody Houston has been an avid student of the martial arts for over 20 years.  Prior to his introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA he spent years studying Kajukenbo, Kung Fu, Karate and Boxing with a variety of different dojos and instructors.  Then after years of searching for something more he was able to find a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA coach and team in Bend, OR.  The date was Feb. 14th, 2000 and since then he has never looked back.

He spent 2.5 years training under Professor JT Taylor (Marcelo Alonso BJJ) and the Desert Dog Fight Team and it was also during this period that he was first introduced to Professor Marcelo Alonso (Carslon Gracie BJJ).  Eventually he moved to Portland, OR to finish his college education and began his training period with Professor Matt Thornton and Straight Blast Gym International.  He received his Blue and Purple belts in BJJ from Matt Thornton and also received an Associates Degree in Business Administration and Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Portland State University.

After three years of training and teaching in Portland, OR he moved to Bellingham, WA where he discovered that there was no place that taught BJJ or MMA at the time.  He decided to take the plunge and opened his first gym (West Coast Fight Club).  This was when he truly discovered his purpose in life and his passion for coaching athletes.  While running the WCFC team in Bellingham he decided to re-new his affiliation and relationship with Professor Marcelo Alonso.  Under Professor Alonso he received his Brown Belt and on April 9, 2011 he was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.

During his time in Bellingham Houston also was the co-founder of Fight Night Entertainment (Pro/Am MMA Promotion) and spent years as a matchmaker.  West Coast Fight Club eventually became Houston’s United Combat Sports (HUCS) which he ran out of a different facility.

In April of 2012 Coach Houston decided it was time for a change of scenery and not quite sure where he would start his next program he came to beautiful Port Angeles to visit family for a couple weeks.  While in PA he met Dave Holden and visited the brand new CageworX Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA facility.  A month later Holden offered Houston the Head Coach/Manager position at CageworX and within a year Houston and Holden created the CageworX Promotions LLC amateur MMA fighting series in Port Angeles as well as the CageworX MMA amateur MMA sanctioning body.  In 2015, Cody Houston was given ownership of CageworX and the facility was moved to the current 8th Street location. Houston is currently a licensed MMA judge and matchmaker in the state of Washington and received his Kru Yai certification from Ajahn Suchart in December 2016. His next goals are to achieve a Black Belt in Judo and to continue competing in BJJ and Submission Grappling competitions.
