There’s been so much going on at CageworX, these are just a few of the recent highlights!
CageworX Showcased in King 5 Segment
King 5 was doing a story in the Port Angeles area during early August. They stopped by CageworX and spent a good amount of time taking video of folks training at the gym and talking with Head Instructor, Cody Houston. Check out the video!
In August, we had a number of CageworX members take their leave from Port Angeles. This included purple belts, Kassio Atila (Brazil) and Jeremiah San Nicolas (Guam). Fight Team Member, Ryan Rodorigo, Continue reading CageworX Gym News→
CageworX will again offer our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Women’s Self Defense Class at the end of July. Women of all ages* and fitness levels are welcome! You do not need any previous martial arts or self-defense training to participate.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s techniques are an essential part of self defense training because of its focus on using leverage instead of muscle. A smaller, weaker person can get away from or even overpower a larger, stronger attacker by using proper technique.
In 2012, CageworX became the premier MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai training facility on the North Olympic Peninsula. This year, we made an important change of location and we couldn’t be happier with the increased visibility now that we’re on 8th Street. It’s time to celebrate our move! CageworX MMA in Port Angeles invites everyone to come to our Grand Opening Celebration week starting Monday, August 3rd.
Check It Out: FREE Classes for New Visitors
All week, newcomers can try a FREE Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and/or Muay Thai class (both adult and kids classes). We can talk all day about the high quality instruction provided by Head Instructor Cody Houston and his staff, but you won’t know until you actually experience it. Maybe it’s time to try something different. Maybe you keep driving past and have wanted to see what going on in there. Maybe you want a different workout that’s fun and teaches you a useful skill at the same time. Just try it…for FREE!!!Click here for class times.

If you’re interested in competing in or watching the Pacific Northwest’s largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament, it’s coming up soon! The Revolution BJJ Tournament is held three times a year in Tacoma, WA. The venue is Pacific Lutheran University, Olson Auditorium. Online registration is now open and will close July 13th.
As usual, there are gi and no gi divisions for both children and adults, men and women. Visit the event website, leapllc.com, to also see the weight classes, approximate schedule and tournament rules.
If you are thinking of competing, it’s especially important to check the rules since every tournament is different. You don’t want to get go for a knee bar that got you the win at NAGA, but will get you disqualified at The Revolution! You should also make sure your gi is ok for competition. For example, if your sleeves are too short, it’s time to buy your new gi top NOW. If you holes in the knees of your gi pants, it’s time to buy new gi pants NOW.
If this is your first tournament, please be sure to check with your coaches to see if it’s a good idea for you to compete. They can also help you get ready in the weeks and days before the competition. CageworX will probably have a group carpooling from the gym. Check with Cody for details.

CageworX Fight Team Results
Saturday, May 30th, CageworX MMA participated in the USEACA* Muay Thai Cultural Event. This was Washington state’s first Pro/Am Muay Thai event, held at the Nisqually Youth & Community Center in Olympia.
CageworX fighter, Josh Pulczinski, fought well losing by decision against a tough opponent. He trained hard for this one and we’re extremely proud of him! We later found out that he’d managed to stay on his feet for all three rounds despite having pneumonia. Josh McCool of CageworX also worked hard to prepare for his fight; unfortunately, his opponent dropped out at the last minute. *United South East Asia Cultural Association
Saturday, June 6th, Adaeus Wilson-Premo made a terrific debut as a CageworX fighter by taking an MMA fight with less than 24 hours notice. He fought on KOA Combat’s ‘Ewalu’ @ Green River Community College in Auburn, WA, winning in the first round by arm triangle. Huge congratulations to Adaeus! Thanks also to the CageworX cage set up crew who did a great job of putting up and taking down the cage quickly and efficiently in the sweltering heat of their gym.

New Schedule for CageworX Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes
We are excited to see how much our Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes has grown since the move to 8th Street. The mats have been full of kids enjoying the classes and it is now time for us to ensure all of them get the best and safest possible training. With that goal in mind, as of Monday August 31st, we will be separating the youth BJJ classes into two groups:
1) 3:15 pm to 4 pm for children ages 5-8 2) 4pm to 5 pm for children ages 9-14
This change only affects the Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. The Youth Muay Thai classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays will remain the same, with one class at 4pm.
Sunday Yoga at CageworX for Gym Members
Yoga is returning to the gym’s class schedule! Sara Shearer will be teaching a power yoga class every Sunday, 4 to 5 pm, for CageworX gym members. This class is included with your gym membership fee, so there’s no excuse not to try it out! It’s time to work on developing your flexibility and strengthening some neglected but important muscle groups that are critical for good balance and Continue reading July 25, 2015: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Women’s Self Defense Class→

On Monday, May 18, 2015, we gave stripes to all the current students in our Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. Everyone has been working (and playing!) as they learn the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We’re proud of everyone as they make progress on their martial arts path! Congratulations to our gray belts, John and Dee Dee and white belts Anna, Sam, Chase, Mark, Anthony, Natalie, Emma and Lucas!
Explanation of Youth BJJ Ranking System
In the Youth Program, rather than testing, Professor Houston checks students’ progress every day they train. Periodically, we will give stripes to mark advancement in technique and knowledge. Unlike the adult program, the youth students are also evaluated based on attendance and attention during classes.
The progression of belt colors are white, gray, yellow, orange and green. Up to four stripes may be given on a belt before advancing to the next color. When a student showed a marked change in their BJJ understanding, they may be promoted to the next belt level. When students reach the age of 16, they enter the adult BJJ belt promotion system of white, blue, purple, brown, black.
Congratulations to the CageworX Kids Martial Arts Competitors
On Saturday May 2, 2015, four members of the CageworX Youth Competition Team competed at the Youth Grappling Tournament, Chess on the Mat. John, Anna, Dee Dee, Mark and their families made their way to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of Tacoma who organized and hosted the event. With their families and coaches cheering them on, all four did great! Dee Dee got a silver grappling against a GIANT kid who was much bigger than her. John and Anna each got bronzes competing well as they become veteran competitors (this was their fourth tournament). Mark won gold in his very first competition ever! We are so proud of all of them for their hard work and excellent sportsmanship.
